America's Beloved Heroes

FARRELLY was named for CAPTAIN JOSEPH D. FARRELLY, who paid the ultimate price in the attack on America September 11, 2001. Joseph Farrelly, age 47, Staten Island, New York, was employed as a firefighter and known to children as "Fireman Joe." Battalion Chief with Engine Co. 4 on South Street in Manhattan, Mr. Farrelly lost his life at the World Trade Center. A 22-year firefighter for the Fire Department of New York, Captain Farrelly left home on September 10 for a 24-hour shift. Known for leaving romantic notes to his wife throughout their 25-year marriage, she found the last note when she came home on September 11, "I can’t begin to tell you how much I love you. Words are inadequate. Already I can’t wait to get home." Captain Farrelly is survived by his wife, Stacey; his children, Ryan, Devin, and Julianne; and a host of drug-addicted and otherwise compromised children the Farrellys fostered for many years. A lifelong fan of Bruce Springsteen, Springsteen wrote a song called "Into the Fire" in honor of Captain Farrelly. We salute Captain Farrelly, a hero, and name this sweet lady in his honor.
