PENNY was named for RICHARD A. PENNY, who paid the ultimate price in the attack on America September 11, 2001. Richard A. Penny,
age 53, New York, New York, was employed as a recycling program worker with the World Trade Center Project Renewal, where he worked at the World Trade Center, where he lost his life on the upper floor of the North Tower.
Mr. Penny brought his life full circle from a beginning as valedictorian of his high school class to drugs and crime, leading to a decade of homeless shelters and distress, culminating finally in a rented room and a steady job. He was described as a quiet and hard-working gentleman. Just when his life took a turn for the better, terrorists zapped the rug out from under him. An adopted only child, having survived his parents, he is survived by a son sharing his name and by three grandchildren, with whom he had lost touch. It is heartbreaking to know that his goal was to try to find his son and his son searched for his father, only to be reunited after the elder Mr. Penny's life was horribly ended.
We salute Mr. Penny, a hero, and name this beautiful dog in his honor. (Source: New York Times 10/17/01 and 10/25/01)
