Hope for Hope

If you don't mind, I would appreciate your allowing me to interrupt you for just a minute so I can tell you my story. I'll shower you with Siberian cyber kisses if you would be so kind as to oblige. In a nutshell, I have heartworm disease. Pet Harbor Rescue simply cannot continue to help homeless pets and pay for my veterinary care. They and I need your help. Thank you for listening. Now please allow my to elaborate. I, Hope, want to tell you my story.

HopeSometimes rescues have to reach their arms out beyond their boundaries to help out. Sometimes they need other rescues to help them in their own boundaries. So they help out others in turn. Just such a thing happened to Pet Harbor. They got one of those dreaded calls, "We have a situation here. Somewhere around 70 Siberians were confiscated. We need your help." The call came from a shelter near Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Several East Coast Siberian Husky rescues came to the rescue (no pun intended). Southern Siberian Rescue took in the majority of the dogs. Most of them needed pretty extensive medical treatment. Pet Harbor Rescue was able to take two: Frostie and Hope. The ears of both dogs were destroyed. Here are some newspaper articles about the circumstances from which we hailed. Article #1 and Article #2.

We were allowed to intermingle in that place and make babies. Now, remember, I said our medical condition was not the greatest. We should not be having babies anyway but especially in light of our condition.

HopeHeigh-ho, heigh-ho, off to the vet we went. Besides vaccines, flea prevention, and worming, the first order of business was a heartworm test. The test detects the presence of three diseases: heartworm disease, Ehrlichiosis, and Lyme disease. The good news is I tested negative for Ehrlichiosis and Lyme disease. The bad news is I have heartworm disease.

Hope First, please take my advice. Keep your dogs on heartworm preventative. If you love your dog, you will. Preventative is inexpensive. The opposite is not the case. If your dog gets heartworm disease, it can cost up to $1,000 to treat. We have even heard of some vets who charge $1,500! A packet of preventative for six months can cost you $25. See? Simple math. Please love your dog & keep him/her on preventative. Our foster mommy knows firsthand. Her first Siberian Husky died 30 years ago of heartworm disease. Her vet had told her only to keep dogs on preventative during summer months. Unfortunately, that advice killed her dog. So please keep your dog on preventative year-round, not just in the summertime. Isn't your dog worth that? Oh, by the way, you buy preventative from your vet. It's not something you can buy in a department store. Here is a picture of what heartworm disease looks like, but it's not for the squeamish. Picture

HopeThe second reason I am writing is to ask you to help Pet Harbor Rescue pay for my vet care. Pet Harbor has taken in many Siberian Huskies and cats lately who have cost quite a bit in veterinary care. Let me roll out the bottom line. Pet Harbor can't continue to do what it does without a bank account. When the dogs come to Pet Harbor, they have all sorts of medical issues. Granted, our vets are fantastic and extremely reasonably priced, but when Pet Harbor gets homeless pets, most of us are in poor condition and, therefore, require extensive medical care. So in order to help other dogs since my medical care has depleted the bank account, Pet Harbor needs your help.

Not counting monthly care, my initial medical costs were $606.93 (spay $180.78, heartworm treatment $321.75, routine medical care $104.40). If you can help, please send tax-deductible donations to
